Barrels

We keep a wide selection of barrels with different bores and shapes available, so you can find the best possible combination for your sound expectations. Furthermore we would like to assist you in finding the matching mouthpiece/reed combination.

SCHWENK & SEGGELKE - Barrels

The barrel is the most important link between sound generator (mouthpiece/reed) and resonator (upper/lower joint and bell). Within this small part of the instrument, we have the possibility

  • to make changes to the basic intonation of the clarinet, in a range of about 3 - 4 Hz
  • to finetune the intonation in between the registers
  • to make an adaptation to different mouthpieces
  • to improve the sound characteristics and also the air resistance

Types of Wood

We use wood called grenadill, boxwood and mopane.

Models

Currently, the following variations are available:

  • silver or gold plated with two metal rings
  • as above but with a wider waist (only for A/Bb clar., without fig.)
  • 2 carbon windings
  • with a metal ring at the bottom and carbon winding at the top
  • with 2 wooden rings wider waist

We manufacture the following lengths and bore variants in combination to this mouthpiece types:

Combinations

3 types of wood x 5 models x 16 bore diameters x 32 lengths result in 7680 ways which one would expect us to have available in large numbers to test. We ask for your understanding, that not everything is always in stock.

Special Production of Barrels

Note: Of course, we can create your desired barrel for different clarinets from other manufacturers. For this we need time and some information from you:

  1. which mouthpiece would you like to use?
  2. what length should the barrel have?
  3. the measure of the upper tenon of the clarinet?
  4. which bore, wood and construction should the barrel have?

If you cannot provide these information by yourself, it would be best to have your instrument at the workshop.
